Call for Applications
Bronisław Geremek (1932 – 2008), a scholar, intellectual and politician, a passionate Pole and exemplary European, was a source of intellectual inspiration as well as a model for prudent action and moral decency for many. Geremek was a supporter of the IWM almost from its inception and a member of its Board of Patrons until his death. The fellowship program shall commemorate his name and his work.
Objective
The Bronisław Geremek Fellowship program aims to foster the study and reflection of the Polish national heritage in the context of European tradition. The fellowships will enable Polish senior and junior researchers to work on a research project of their choice and to become members of the IWM’s international, multidisciplinary community of scholars. The fellowships are open to all academic disciplines in the humanities and social sciences; research proposals related to one of the IWM’s main fields are strongly encouraged (for details please see www.iwm.at/research.htm).
Conditions
The Bronisław Geremek Fellows will be invited to spend the academic year 2012/13 (ten months from September 2012 to June 2013) at the IWM to pursue their research projects while working in residence. Senior Visiting Fellows will receive a stipend of € 4,000 per month and Junior Visiting Fellows will receive a stipend of EUR 2,000 per month to cover accommodation, living expenses, travel, health insurance and incidentals during the stay in Vienna. Furthermore, the IWM will provide an office, access to the internet, in-house research facilities and other relevant sources in Vienna. The fellows will participate in the scholarly community and activities of the Institute.
Eligibility
Candidates for the Bronisław Geremek Senior Visting Fellowship
- must be Polish citizens or permanently reside in Poland
- must hold a senior academic or research position in the humanities or social sciences, at least Associate Professor level or equivalent
- must be experienced researchers with documented achievements in their field
- must not be older than 60 years
Candidates for the Bronisław Geremek Junior Visting Fellowship
- must be Polish citizens or permanently reside in Poland
- must currently pursue a doctoral degree or have recently obtained a Ph.D. in any discipline in the humanities or social sciences
- must not be older than 35 years
Application
The application consists of the following materials:
1. the application form (please download here)
2. a concise research proposal in English (max. 4 pages, double-spaced, A4) including
- the scientific problem(s) addressed
- critical consideration of current relevant literature
- research goals and expected results
- work and time schedule (if the duration of the project exceeds the ten-month term at the IWM, please indicate which part shall be completed during the fellowship)
3. a curriculum vitae and list of publications
4. two letters of recommendation by scholars familiar with the applicant’s academic work (junior fellows only)
