Deadline: September 15, 2012

A three year fellowship (36 months) is offered to outstanding African junior researchers holding a Ph. D. (not more than three years after completion of Ph. D.). Project ideas must be developed independently by the applicant and should be realized primarily at an African institution. African scholars who have submitted their thesis but still need to pass the defense are also invited to submit a pre-proposal. If the applicant is still in the final phase of the Ph.D., a letter from the main supervisor is needed that the Ph.D. will be completed until the end of the selection process. The fellowship covers salary, research, travel and administrative costs up to a maximum of 90,000 EUR.

The budget must be justified specifically. It could include:
• Salary of the fellow or topping-up if already employed at the African research institution (depending on experience and customary local salaries),
• Alternatively, the budget for the topping up of the salary can be used to employ lecturers in order to reduce personal teaching duties
• Salaries of graduate students involved in the research project,
• Travel expenses for conferences/workshops,
• Research visits to African/non-African institutions of up to 3 – 4 months per year (including visits to the German partner institution),
• Language courses, or courses for project management etc.,
• Consumables,
• Publication costs,
• Administrative costs (max. 6,000 EUR),
• Small equipment (max. 10 % of total budget).

Additional and optional budget items
• Additional German postdoctoral fellow (optional, max. 25,000 EUR),
• Additional Mentorship Program (optional, max. 10,000 EUR),
• Costs of Preparatory Meeting for the full proposal with German partner institution and German Postdoctoral Fellow (optional, max. 5,000 EUR).

Application and Selection Process
The application is organized as a three-stage process, and pre-proposals must be submitted as one pdf file in English by 15 September 2012 to humanities2012@volkswagenstiftung.de, or alternatively via the electronic application system (https://portal.volkswagenstiftung.de/vwsantrag/ login.do?siteLanguage=en). In case you choose the latter means, only one file, PDF format, should contain the pre-proposal itself and all the appendices. After the selection of “Pre-proposal description” in the electronic application system this file should be uploaded there.

Stage 1
The pre-proposal applications will be reviewed by an international expert committee. Decisions will be communicated by December 2012. In case of a positive evaluation, recommendations from the review panel for the full proposal will be sent. Please, note the attached check-list for pre-proposals for Postdoctoral fellowships in the Humanities in Africa. Successful applicants of stage 1 may apply for funding of preparatory meetings of the prospective fellow with the German partner institution and the German postdoctoral fellow (if applicable). Date, venue, participants, and costs of these meetings have to be specified already in the pre-proposals. Due to the expected high number of submissions, we ask for your understanding that the Foundation cannot give any reasons in the case of refusal/rejection of the application.

Stage 2
Successful applicants of stage 1 will be invited to submit full proposals. All full proposals will undergo an international review process. Details of the requirements for full proposals including the recommendations made by the review committee will be forwarded to the successful applicants of stage 1. May 2012 6

Stage 3
Successful applicants of stage 2 will be invited to present their project at a selection workshop to be held in Africa in spring 2013. During the conference they will also be interviewed by an international review panel.

Notes for Applicants:
The Foundation can only provide funds to academic institutions. Furthermore, it is not possible to fund projects for development aid or short-term applications. The Foundation cannot consider applications which have been submitted at the same time either in the same or some similar form to other funding institutions. Also, the Foundation is not able to allocate funding to cover commitments entered into prior to the receipt of the grant letter.

Deadline: August 31, 2012

The Open Society Fellowship was founded in 2008 to support individuals pursuing innovative and unconventional approaches to fundamental open society challenges. The fellowship funds work that will enrich public understanding of those challenges and stimulate far-reaching and probing conversations within the Open Society Foundations and in the world.

A fellowship project might identify a problem that has not previously been recognized, develop new policy ideas to address familiar problems, or offer a new advocacy strategy. Project themes should cut across at least two areas of interest to the Open Society Foundations. Among these are human rights, government transparency, access to information and to justice, and the promotion of civil society and social inclusion.

Fellows are expected to take full advantage of the foundations’ expansive reach and work to bring new people and fresh ideas into the organization’s ambit. Successful projects should push the boundaries of current thinking and carry lessons that can be applied to a variety of settings. Fellows may produce a variety of work products, including publications such as books, reports, or blogs; innovative public-education projects; or the launch of new campaigns or organizations. They may also engage in activities such as hosting panel discussions, traveling to conferences, participating in policy debates, and aggressively promoting their ideas in public venues.

Eligibility Criteria
The Open Society Fellowship accepts proposals from anywhere in the world. Applicants should possess a deep understanding of their chosen subject and a track record of professional accomplishment. Past and current fellows have included journalists, activists, academics, and practitioners in a variety of fields. Successful applicants will be eager to exploit the many resources offered by the Open Society Foundations and be prepared to engage constructively with our global network. Ideal fellows are specialists who can see beyond the parochialisms of their field and possess the tenacity to complete a project of exceptional merit. Proficiency in spoken English is required.

Ineligibility Criteria
The fellowship does not fund enrollment for degree or non-degree study at academic institutions, including dissertation research.

This is a fellowship for individuals only; proposals from two or more applicants will not be accepted.

Guidelines
Interested applicants should download and review the fellowship guidelines at left.

Applicants who are uncertain whether their topic fits within the foundations’ focus areas are invited to submit a brief letter of inquiry, accompanied by a CV, before proceeding with the online application process. That letter of inquiry should be addressed to OSFellows@sorosny.org.

Deadline: October 15, 2012

The Hill Foundation is a UK registered charity, which provides scholarships for outstanding young citizens of the Russian Federation or first generation Israelis of Russian descent. The Trustees favour candidates who have demonstrated extremely high academic ability and also personal and social qualities of a high order. They are looking for young people who intend to develop their careers in their homeland who indicate in their application that they wish to spend their lives in ways beneficial to their home society, whether in business, academic life, public service, the arts or the professions.

Seven to ten scholarships (for graduates and undergraduates) are normally awarded each year.

Am I eligible?
Citizens of Russia whose first degree (if applicable) has been taken at a Russian university and who have not subsequently taken any other degree. Israeli passport holders who are the immediate children of a Russian national or Soviet national born in the Russian Federation whose first degree (if applicable) has been taken at an Israeli University and who have not taken any other degree.

Most Hill Scholars come to Oxford to do research or study for a higher degree but the Trustees also encourage applications from graduates of Russian/Israeli Universities who would like to benefit from the experience of the Oxford tutorial system and take a ‘second first degree’ with senior status. Candidates should be applying to start a second BA at Oxford in October 2013.

Applicants must intend to return to their home country at the end of their studies.

Please ensure you meet the requirements for entry to your course, including English language requirements. See the Course Guide for more information.

What does it cover?
100% of university and college fees and a grant for living expenses (the rate in 2012-13 is £13,590).

The award is tenable for the period of fee liability (usually the same length as the course).

How do I apply?
You must apply to the University of Oxford as described on the Undergraduate Admissions webpage through the UCAS system. Please note that the closing date for all UCAS applications is 15 October 2012 and certain courses may require students to register for tests before this.

Once you have been offered a place by your college you may apply for the Hill Foundation Scholarship. This will involve completing the undergraduate scholarship application form (UND_1314) and submitting it in February 2013, exact date to be confirmed.

How will I know if I have been successful?
Successful candidates will be notified by email in early April 2013.

This webpage will be updated to show when all decisions have been made. If you have not heard from us by the time this notice is posted, then your application to this scheme has been unsuccessful. Due to the volume of applications we receive, we are unable to contact unsuccessful applicants individually or provide feedback on applications.’
